Marbling with Shaving Foam

The workshop for March was the wonderful technique of marbling with shaving foam!  I ran this in the shop, in addition to a group of 24 Brownies which was fun!

First of all you need a can of cheap shaving foam (not gel!).  Spray it onto a flat surface like a box lid or tray, and smooth it out so that the foam is as flat as possible using a craft spreader or a ruler.
Next using alcohol inks or water-based acrylic paint in dropper bottles dot some colour on the foam as shown:

Then using something with a pointed end (I use the end of a paintbrush!) swirl the ink/paint around to make a pattern:

When you are happy with the pattern (what you see is what you are going to get!), place a piece of card or paper on top of the foam and press down lightly to make sure all of the card/paper is in contact with the foam.

Carefully lift the card/paper and lay on a flat surface (it should be covered in foam!)

Using the craft scraper or ruler, start at one end and slowly but firmly scrape off the foam in one sweep across.  Repeat until all the foam is removed - you should be left with a marbled pattern on the card/paper.

You can add the scraped off foam back into the tray and create further patterns (which always be less defined than the first one, but make interesting backgrounds!).  You can also add more ink or paint and continue to take prints off the foam.

I then used the patterned paper and card that I had created in a range of different ways - to make fractured cards, tea bag folding, create toppers and backgrounds.  Some examples are shown below
